Decimal and Binary File Size Units
File size units use two systems. Decimal units increase by 1,000, for example kB, MB and GB. Binary units increase by 1,024, for example KiB, MiB and GiB.
Decimal units are often used to show the storage space on hard drives, SSDs, memory cards, and USB drives. They are also commonly used for internet speeds and mobile data plans.
Binary units are commonly used when measure computer memory and storage. For example, 1 kB equals 1,024 bytes.
Why there are confusions between file size units system?
The mix‑up goes back to early works in computing. It didn’t count the unit in exactly thousands — it worked in chunks of 1,024 bytes. Because 1,024 is pretty close to 1,000, people started call it as kilobyte. That mix-up happened to megabytes and gigabytes as well, these terms still get mixed today. As storage became larger, the difference grew more noticeable. This led to separate binary names such as KiB, MiB, and GiB.
