What Is a Terabyte?

Drive manufacturers normally use decimal terabytes. Some operating systems calculate storage using binary units but may still display the result as “GB.” This is why a 1 TB drive can appear as roughly 931 GB after it is connected. Formatting and system files may reduce the available space a little further.
How Much Can One Terabyte Hold?
One terabyte can hold a large collection of photos, documents, music, or video. The exact number depends on each file’s size, quality, format, and compression.
For example, a 1 TB drive might store hundreds of thousands of photos or many hours of high-definition video. Uncompressed video, professional photographs, and modern games use space much more quickly.
How to Convert Terabytes
To convert terabytes to a decimal file-size unit, multiply by the number of that unit contained in one terabyte.
Target value = TB value × units in 1 TB
Example: Convert 2.5 TB to GB
There are 1,000 gigabytes in one terabyte:
2.5 TB × 1,000 = 2,500 GB
Example: Convert 1 TB to GiB
Convert the terabyte to bytes, then divide by the number of bytes in one gibibyte:
1,000,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 931.32 GiB
